Curaçao is a long-stretched island, with a total area of 472 km2. It is popular to rent a boat in the capital of the island, Willemstad. Curaçao belongs to the Leeward Islands. The terms ‘leeward’ and ‘upwind’ date from the time of sailing and indicate the location of the islands in relation to the centre of the trade winds. In Curaçao, there is almost always a strong easterly wind and  Northeast trade winds, which ensure that the hot weather never becomes unpleasant. 

The amount of rain is considerable throughout the year, but it rains very irregularly. A few days a year it absolutely pours, but then it is dry again for months. For this reason, you should avoid renting a boat in Curaçao during the rainy season, which occurs between October and January. 

Temperatures are fairly constant, with only minor fluctuations throughout the year. The annual average temperature is 31.2 ºC during the day and 25.6 ºC at night. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of 26.5ºC. The warmest month is September with an average temperature of 28.9ºC.

Curaçao International Airport, also known as Hato Airport or Aeropuerto Horta, is the only international airport in Curaçao. The airport is located on the north coast of Curaçao, only 12 kilometres from Willemstad. From the airport, you can take a bus, the only public transport on the island, to Willemstad. The buses run on a fixed schedule, and because of the large number of bus stops, you almost never have to walk far to your destination! Another good tip to note is that the buses are very cheap. 

Before you leave for Willemstad, you might want to take a look at the Hato caves, near the airport! The caves are said to have been inhabited around the year 500 A.D. by the Arawak Indians, the original inhabitants of Curaçao.
