About the experience
There are islands you visit, and then there are islands that genuinely change the way you think about the Adriatic. Vis is the latter. The furthest inhabited island from the Croatian mainland, largely closed to visitors until the early 1990s due to its role as a Yugoslav military stronghold, Vis has a depth and an authenticity that most of the Dalmatian coast has long since traded away for tourism. This full-day private speedboat tour, running from 1st July to 15th September with up to eight guests on board, takes you into the heart of it , from legendary sea caves to some of the most celebrated beaches in all of Europe.
Departing at 09:00 or 10:00, your guides, fluent in Croatian and English, set the tone for the day the moment you clear the harbour. The sound system kicks in, the icebox is stocked, and the onboard shower means that however many times you decide to jump in the sea , and there will be many , you'll always be comfortable on board. The open water between the islands is part of the experience too: the speedboat covers the distances at full throttle, the bow lifting over the swell, the spray catching the light, the coastline shifting and changing with every mile.
The undisputed centrepiece of the day is the Blue Cave on the tiny island of Biševo. Known locally for centuries but only officially opened to visitors in the early twentieth century, the cave produces one of the most extraordinary natural light effects anywhere in the Mediterranean. Sunlight filtering through an underwater opening reflects off the sandy floor and bathes the entire interior in a deep, otherworldly aquamarine glow , white objects appear to turn silver, and the water shimmers in a colour that photographs simply cannot reproduce. It is, by almost universal agreement, a bucket list moment.
From Biševo, the route continues to Vis Island itself, and to Komiža , a fishing village of stone houses, a Venetian-era tower, and a harbour so picturesque it was chosen as a filming location for Mamma Mia 2. It is the kind of place that rewards a slow wander , past the seafront tavernas, along the old walls, and down to the tiny Lucica beach that curves away from the harbour. Lunch here, at one of the waterfront konoba, is one of the better meals you will have in Croatia.
The afternoon takes you to Stiniva Cove , repeatedly voted the most beautiful beach in Europe, and easy to understand why. Surrounded by towering limestone cliffs that almost close overhead, the cove opens into a narrow stretch of white pebbles and water so clear it seems barely real. Accessible only from the sea or via a steep coastal path, it remains one of the few genuinely spectacular places on the Croatian coast that cannot be overrun by land traffic. Swimming here , enclosed by the cliffs, the water glowing around you , is as close as the Adriatic gets to perfection.
The Blue Lagoon on Budikovac Island offers one final swimming stop before the day winds down , a sheltered, turquoise lagoon that serves as a fitting close to a full day on the water.
