About the experience

Step aboard De Verbetering, a beautifully preserved historic vessel, and experience the Netherlands from the water as it was meant to be seen. Our journey begins in the vibrant heart of Amsterdam. As we leave the city center, we sail onto the wide waters of the IJ, where the skyline blends historic charm with modern architecture.
Our first destination is the world-famous Zaanse Schans. (2 hour stop, museums and mills charge an entrance fee)
From there, we continue along the River Zaan through Zaanstad and Wormerveer, passing historic warehouses and charming riverside homes that reflect the region’s rich trading past. The landscape gradually opens as we approach the serene Alkmaardermeer, a peaceful lake surrounded by wide skies and grazing cattle.
A highlight of the voyage is sailing through the famous Dutch polders near Purmerend, where you can enjoy a delicious meal in one of the many lounges. (1,5 hour stop)
Here, you truly see and feel what it means to travel above the land itself gliding along dikes higher than the surrounding fields and rooftops.
Finally, we cruise back to Amsterdam, completing a journey through living history, timeless landscapes, and the unique spirit of Holland.

Itinerary

Starting location:
Amsterdam citycenter
Zaanse Schans
Our journey begins in the historic heart of Amsterdam, sailing across the IJ past the creative and industrial waterfront of the NDSM-werf. From there, we continue north toward the Zaanse Schans, where history comes alive along the River Zaan. 2 Hour stop, museums and mills charge an entrance fee.
River Zaan
From Zaanse Schans, the River Zaan winds northward through historic industrial landscapes, passing the towns of Wormerveer and Zaanstad, where old warehouses and classic Dutch homes line the waterfront. As the river gradually widens and the scenery opens into vast green polders and it gently flows onward toward the peaceful waters of the Alkmaardermeer.
Polders and Prumerend
The Beemster polder, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a masterpiece of 17th-century land reclamation, laid out in a perfect geometric pattern of fields, canals, and farmhouses reclaimed from the sea. Near Purmerend were we stop for 1,5 hour for lunch. The surrounding polders stretch wide and low beneath the dikes, offering the unique sensation of sailing above the land in one of the Netherlands’ most iconic reclaimed landscapes.
Back to Amsterdam
From Purmerend, the Noordhollandsch Kanaal runs straight and calm through wide open polders, lined with dikes, grazing cattle, and distant church towers. As you approach Amsterdam, the rural landscape gradually gives way to busier waterways and historic city views, marking a graceful return to the capital.
