What season is best for a boat charter in Curaçao?

Curaçao belongs to the Leeward Islands. The terms ‘leeward’ and ‘upwind’ date from the time of sailing and indicate the location of the islands in relation to the centre of the trade winds. In Curaçao, there is almost always a strong easterly wind and Northeast trade winds, which ensure that the hot weather never becomes unpleasant.

The amount of rain is considerable throughout the year, but it does not rain often. A few days a year it absolutely pours, but then it is dry again for months. For this reason, you should avoid renting a boat during the rainy season, which occurs between October and January.

Temperatures are constant, with only minor fluctuations throughout the year. The annual average temperature is 31.2 ºC during the day and 25.6 ºC at night. The coldest month is January, with an average temperature of 26.5ºC. The warmest month is September, with an average temperature of 28.9ºC.

Where can I charter a boat in Curaçao?

Curaçao is a long-stretched island, with a total area of 472 km2. It is popular to rent a boat in the capital of the island, Willemstad. Located on the southeast side of Curaçao, Willemstad is the perfect base for exploring the Caribbean Island. The city lies on a natural harbor, called Schottegat which is the largest natural harbor in the Caribbean and is connected to the Caribbean Sea via Sint Annabaai. Did you know that the inner city of Willemstad is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites? We love that fact!

In addition to Willemstad, you can also rent a boat in Fisherman's Harbor.

Where can I sail on a boat rental in Curaçao?

The Northeast trade wind, that always blows from the same angle, makes Curaçao an ideal sailing destination. It is popular to sail along the south coast to Klein Curaçao to enjoy a weekend trip to Bonaire.

The sailing center of Curaçao is the Spanish Water. Keep in mind that a sailing license is required to sail in the Spanish Water and that the northeastern coasts are rough, as opposed to the southeastern ones.

One of the best things to do is to visit Curaçao in late January, just after the rainy season. That's when a sailing regatta is held! Join in or rent a boat and watch from a distance.

Renting a boat on Curaçao is also recommended for those who like to dive. Curaçao is known for its spectacular dive sites, which are rated amongst the best in the world... it's hard not to be impressed by the coral reefs and tropical fish you'll encounter underwater.

What can I do on a boat charter in Curaçao?

With a boat charter in Curacao, why not set out for a day of deep-sea fishing? If you want to avoid large tourist crowds, we recommend that you consider choosing a route towards the west coast of Curaçao. There, you’ll be sure to stumble upon an abundance of quiet bays, where you can dive deep down into the Blue Room, a famous underwater paradise.

This particular cave fascinates even the most experienced divers with a mesmerizing blue light, that is caused by the sun shining through crystal-clear waters.

It’s important that we tell you that a holiday in Curaçao is never complete without enjoying a sunset from your boat charter. Renting a boat in Curaçao also allows you to swim in sparkling waters, gaze at endless views over the sea and immerse yourself in the mystery of life underwater. So, what are you waiting for?

How to get to Curaçao?

Curaçao International Airport, also known as Hato Airport or Aeropuerto Horta, is the only international airport in Curaçao. The airport is located on the north coast of Curaçao, only 12 kilometers from Willemstad. From the airport, you can take a bus, the only public transport on the island, to Willemstad. The buses run on a fixed schedule, and because of the large number of bus stops, you almost never have to walk far to your destination! Another good tip to note is that the buses are very cheap.

Before you leave for Willemstad, you might want to look at the Hato caves, near the airport! The caves are said to have been inhabited around the year 500 A.D. by the Arawak Indians, the original inhabitants of Curaçao.

What is the capacity of the boats in Curaçao?

Motorboat: up to 30 people with a maximum of 2 cabins

RIB: up to 8 people

Yacht: up to 31 people with a maximum of 2 cabins

Renting a boat in Curaçao with or without a skipper

Renting a boat in Curaçao with a skipper is ideal if you want to be guided through the best places in the area and get the most out of your sailing experience. You can, however, rent a boat without a skipper if you have the appropriate license, or if there are boats available to rent that do not require a license. It is without a doubt a great idea to be the captain of your own boat if you’re an experienced sailor.
